California Department of Food & Agriculture (CDFA):

Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) Program

CDFA's Antimicrobial Use and Stewardship (AUS) program, the first of its kind in the United States, was established in California with the passage of Senate Bill 27 (SB-27, Hill, 2015). In addition to existing federal policy, this State legislation also brought remaining uses of antibiotics in livestock under veterinary oversight. AUS’ team of veterinarians, epidemiologists, and specialists endeavors to preserve the efficacy of antibiotic drugs for both humans and animals through a comprehensive antibiotic stewardship and monitoring program, meeting the mandates of California’s law, Livestock: Use of Antimicrobial Drugs (Food and Agriculture Code [FAC] Sections 14400 - 14408). An important part of AUS’ work is collaborating with experts to gather data and produce evidence-based guidelines, including projects with UCCE Poultry researchers.
