After the first year, Master Gardeners need 25 hours of volunteer service. You earn volunteer service hours for meetings, garden work and other hours spent contributing to the project. Keep track of the date, volunteer activity, contacts made, and amount of time to record in VMS.
After the first year, Master Gardeners need 12 credits of Continuing Education and 25 hours of qualifying volunteer service to be recertified. Our year runs from July 1 though June 30. Continuing Education trainings are usually provided monthly by the Member Education Committee.
The Basic Requirements for Initial Training are outlined in the UC Master Gardener Administrative Handbook for Program Staff in Chapter 4, pages 22-24. Additionally, methods of how to teach and communicate science-based gardening practices are taught during Initial Training classes.
