In memoriam: Don Luvisi

Donald A. Luvisi, UC Cooperative Extension viticulture advisor emeritus of Kern County, passed away in Bakersfield on July 10 at the age of 87. Luvisi served as the viticulture farm advisor for Kern County from 1960 until his retirement 39 years later in 1999.

Grasshoppers

I have been hearing rumbles about grasshoppers in the Valley, mostly in grasslands. I visited a rice field last week with high grasshopper populations. Most of the grasshoppers were near field borders at a density of about 2-3 per square yard in the most dense areas.
