IREC researchers are evaluating experimental and new potato cultivars IREC Potato Plots for suitability to local soil, climate and market conditions. Studies also evaluate cultivar response to fertilization, seed-spacing, irrigation, and other cultural practices.
The Research and Extension Center System (RECS) supports field research, education and extension activities by providing suitable environments including land, labor, facilities and support staff.
An annual call for proposals is announced on this website, in newsletters and publications February through April. However, off-cycle research projects are generally accepted outside the normal call for proposals as long as space and labor are available.

IREC sits on 140 acres of rich, reclaimed lake-bottom soil with >5% organic matter content. The Tulebasin mucky silty clay loam soil is well suited for growing potatoes, onions, cereal grains, alfalfa, peppermint and forage grasses, all of which you will find growing on the Center.
