#12 Fish Frenzy

Congratulations! You found a UC 4-H Community Adventure Challenge. Good job! 

Your challenge is to identify safe food sources nearby. A strong and nourished body is important for Adventurers!

These adventures are located all around Yolo County (a complete list of locations can be found on the navigation bar on the left). 

Below are directions for how to complete this fun "Fish Frenzy" activity. You may choose to do all three levels of difficulty, each is a little different. Select which level you would like to try first. 

There is also an activity you can do at at home below. 

Are you ready to have some fun and learn about fish?

BEGINNER

1. Do you know what animals lives in lakes? Fish!

2. So… have you ever seen a fish? What do you think a fish looks like? 

3. Find a stick or twig that has fallen to the ground.

4. Draw what you think a fish looks like on the dirt by the trail.

5. Did you get it correct? Click here to see an example of what a fish looks like! 

6. Take a picture and post with #yolo4H

INTERMEDIATE 

1. Find the “Eat Fish Safely” sign on the gate in front of the gravel parking lot.

2. Let’s play a game of “Red Light/ Green Light” with a twist!

3. Look at the green, yellow, and red sections on the sign. Note the different kinds of fish in each category.

4. You will need to move based on what fish is listed.

          A. If it’s from the green group (eat more), you are going to swim around quickly with big arm strokes (pretend you are swimming like a quick fish).

          B. If it’s from the yellow group (eat less), you are going to swim in place with big arm strokes (pretend you are swimming like a slow fish).

          C. If it’s from the red group (do not eat), you are going to stand still and freeze!

ADVANCED

1. Find the “Eat Fish Safely” sign on the gate in front of the gravel parking lot.

2. Using your smartphone, visit this link from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. This website provides recommendations on which fish are farmed in ways that have less impact on the environment.

3. Search the fish of your choice from the green section (eat more) in the “Seafood Search” bar. 

    • Rainbow Trout
    • American Shad (also known as Herring)
    • Chinook Salmon
    • Steelhead Trout
    • Asiatic Clam

    4. Scroll the “Seafood Watch” list. This list shows the method for farming the fish and where it is caught. 

    5. What are your best options when purchasing this fish? 

    6. In the comments section below, tell us which fish you would purchase. 

    WHILE YOU ARE HERE

    There are two more adventures at this location, you can find the signs by hunting around, or using the map to the left for a more precise location. You might also want to continue to take a walk along the deep water ship channel. The paved road turns into gravel at the bridge, and as you continue you can see the port equipment. You might be able to catch a ship being unloaded of their cargo, or a train being loaded.
