Workplace Violence Prevention Program

(THIS PAGE IS CURRENTLY UNDER DEVELOPMENT)
Please contact UC ANR Risk and Safety Services for additional information regarding this program.

A Workplace Violence Prevention Plan (WVPP) is required for each University of California, Agriculture and Natural Resources (ANR) location. The plan should be considered part of every employee’s basic health and safety responsibilities. It contains guidelines that can be used to assist in the prevention and response to workplace violence incidents.

Each location's WVPP will be incorporated as an appendix/attachment to the location's established Injury and Illness Prevention Program (IIPP); as the IIPP is a comprehensive and fundamental written document which details ongoing health and safety responsibilities and resources.

ANR locations are responsible for reviewing each section of the WVPP and inserting location specific information. For assistance in completing your plan and/or local risk assessment, please contact the Workplace Violence Prevention Program (WPVP) Administrator, violenceprevention@ucanr.edu or the UC ANR Risk & Safety Services unit, Ask EH&S a Question.

Location Directors and Safety Coordinators are responsible for the review and update of their local Workplace Violence Prevention Plan on an annual basis. The WVPP shall be reviewed with each new staff member, and at least annually with all staff, consistent with the IIPP review interval.

Background on State Law

In September 2023, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill No. 553 – Occupational Safety: Workplace Violence: Restraining Orders and Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, which adds Section 6401.9 to the California Labor Code and requires employers to develop and implement a Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, to record violent incidents on a log, and to train employees to identify, avoid, and report workplace violence. The law went into effect on July 1, 2024.

SB 553 applies to all UC locations and employees except:

  • Employees who work remotely from a location that is outside UC’s control
  • UC Health facilities, operations, and employees covered by the California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 3342
  • Law enforcement agencies that are a “department or participating department” as defined in the California Code of Regulations, Title 11, Section 1001 and complying with Title 8, Section 3203

For details about SB 553, visit the Cal/OSHA website: https://www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/Workplace-Violence/General-Industry.html
