A Big Wind
On February 19, 1993 at 5:00 AM a big wind blew through the city of Davis. Lots of trees were damaged and CTFRP received reports on 13 root failures. They were all Moraine ash, Fraxinus holotrichia 'Moraine'. The wind was strong and gusty and blew from an atypical direction. It was raining and the soil was saturated. All the trees were planted in turf in medium to high use areas. The mean age of the trees was 25 years, mean height 46 ft., mean DBH 19 inches and mean crown spread 28 ft. All had dense crowns (not in leaf) and some codominant branch structure. Roots were reported as healthy (no decay) and radially well distributed, but shallow. Seven failures caused damage to property and all 13 had to be removed from the landscape.
