Ongoing research

by Penny Pawl, UC Master Gardener of Napa County Last year at holiday time I was given a most unusual gift: an amaryllis bulb encased in wax. I had no idea such a thing existed, so I immediately looked online for how to care for it.

Someone once said that "red doesn't tiptoe into a room; it kicks down the door." Red is bold, fiery, and confident. It's also a warning: think stop signs, traffic lights and fire engines. Don't blow through a stop signs or red traffic light, and please pull over when you hear a siren.

I grew up around roses. My mother had a rather large rose garden, which was her happy place, where she spent many hours tending to her beloved roses.

Dear Colleagues, It's with deep sadness that I share that we lost our colleague Steven Swain, environmental horticulture advisor for Marin and Sonoma counties, on Feb. 8. He was 58. Steven was with his family celebrating his wife's birthday in San Francisco when he collapsed.
