Washingtonia robusta trunk failure, Rancho Cucamonga, California. © 2004 D. R. Hodel.

Here we present and discuss two palm (Arecaceae) trunk failure events where diseases, pests, and old age did not appear to be predisposing factors. A close inspection revealed anomalies in the trunks and leaves of the failed palms, suggesting that an abiotic factor related to where and how the palms were growing might be a predisposing factor. Trunks of Livistona chinensis and Washingtonia robusta failed during high-wind events but they were growing or had been grown in low-light conditions that resulted in abnormally slender trunks that likely had not attained maximum strength. The nomenclature, typification and distribution for 14 taxa of the genus Coccothrinax (Arecaceae) in Cuba described between 1972 and 1995 are reviewed and updated. Of the total of 36 types, 9 lectotypes and 22 isolectotypes are designated, 4 holotypes and 1 isotype are identified. DOI: https://doi.org/10.21414/B12S3B

Copernicia macroglossa, Camagüey, Cuba. © 2018 D. R. Hodel.

The nomenclature, typification, and distribution of Copenicia macroglossa and Copernicia × escarzana (Arecaceae) are updated. Photographs and fragments at HAC of the holotype of C. macroglossa from Berlin that Beccari used to describe this species are identified and documented. The geographical and phytogeographic distribution of both taxa are provided. DOI: https://doi.org/10.21414/B1JS3P

The nomenclature and typification of Pseudophoenix (Arecaceae), a neotropical genus of four species, are reviewed and updated. Plumier's involvement in the description of P. vinifera is reported and discussed, and unpublished Plumier illustrations of the species present at the National Museum of Natural History in Paris are published.  DOI: https://doi.org/10.21414/B1F30Q
