I spent a while at the local food cooperative this weekend looking for weeds. Not outside in the landscaping, but inside with the food and spices. If I seem skeptical about some of these, it's not because I'm trying to give the co-op, or the herbals industry, a hard time.

In a mandarin orchard today, I saw what appeared to be sun burn damage. The bark was missing on the top, south facing branches. It was old damage and was healing over along the edges. I mentioned it to the grower who told me it was roof rat damage.

If there's anything better than a ladybug eating an aphid, it's a ladybug devouring dozens of aphids. Get 'em! Ladybugs--actually, they're "lady beetles"--are garden heroes. And that's the theme of the Bohart Museum of Entomology's open house on Sunday, March 2 from 1 to 4 p.m.
