YouTube Best Practices

YouTube is a platform for long-form video content with a broad audience, including staff, researchers, farmers, and community members. UC ANR uses YouTube to share content in playlists, featuring research highlights, educational series, workshops, and community programs.

Account Set-up

Create a Google Account
Start with a Google account specifically for UC ANR. This keeps the YouTube channel separate from personal accounts and allows multiple team members to manage it safely.

Set Up a Brand Account
Go to YouTube and create a Brand Account under your Google account. A Brand Account allows multiple users to manage the channel without sharing passwords.

Assign at least two team members as backup account admins.

Register your new account here.

Customize Your Channel

  • Add a profile picture (UC ANR logo) and a banner image that reflects your brand.

  • Write a channel description explaining your mission, audience, and types of content.

  • Add links to your website and social media accounts.

Know Your Audience

Focus on research highlights, workshops, educational series, and community programs.

Hook Viewers Early

Capture attention in the first 10–15 seconds with an interesting fact, question, or visual.

Keep Videos Structured and Concise

Organize with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Break longer videos into chapters or segments to make content easier to follow.

Use High-Quality Audio and Visuals

Good lighting and clear sound improve engagement. Even simple setups benefit from steady camera work and minimal background noise.

Optimize for Search (SEO)

Include relevant keywords in titles, descriptions, and tags. Use playlists to organize content and include links to related resources.

Encourage Engagement

Ask viewers to like, comment, share, and subscribe. Respond to comments to build community and trust.

Post Consistently

Maintain a regular upload schedule to improve discoverability and audience retention.

Monitor and Adapt

Track metrics like watch time, audience retention, and traffic sources. Use insights to refine content and focus on what resonates most.
