Wildfire Preparedness

Preparing for wildfire takes a careful understanding of the types of exposures that our homes, landscapes, and properties experience during wildfire. It is critical to understand the fire risk to your home and your community. You can use the Office of the State Fire Marshall's Fire Hazard Severity Zones map to assess the fire risk in your community. Regardless of the risk shown on the map, it is important to consider potential exposures to your property. Generally, homes can survive wildfires by having a well-developed and well-maintained defensible space and using appropriate materials and installation details on the home.  It is important for you to assess your situation and identify potential risks and solutions by using the resources below.

Create Defensible Space

Fire-smart landscaping involves the careful selection, location, and maintenance of vegetation and other combustible materials on a property. By focusing on plant placement and maintenance, you can create a fire-smart landscape that incorporates elements of beauty, safety, and privacy.

Plan to Safely Evacuate

It is important to follow all verified local emergency instructions for evacuations to protect our firefighters, first responders, and communities. Prepare your household ahead of time so you can leave quickly and safely during a wildfire emergency.

Prepare Your Farm and Ranch

Farms and ranches can be designed and maintained to reduce their vulnerability to wildfire. You can design and maintain buildings and infrastructures to reduce their vulnerability to wildfire and fire-related damage to agricultural resources (e.g., soil, crops, pasture, and rangeland).
