Growing and Preserving Cool Season Vegetables
Aug 29, 2019
Join us Monday September 9th 10:00-11:30 am at the Lodi Library for our Master Gardener and Master Food Preserver presentation. Call 209-953-6100 prior to 9/5 to reserve your seat and handouts.
Lodi Public Library, 201 West Locust Street, Lodi, CA
The San Joaquin Master Gardeners will talk about specific cool season vegetables. Living in the Central Valley our growing season is long which enables us to grow a variety of vegetables. Find out what to plant and when to plant for your winter crops.
The San Joaquin Master Food Preservers will speak on pickling vegetables. Pickled foods are either fermented in a brine which is salt or packed in vinegar. Heat processing is then required to destroy microorganisms that can cause spoilage and inactivate enzymes that may affect flavor, color and texture. Pickled foods includes: brined pickles, fresh pack pickles, relish, fruit pickles, sauerkraut and chutneys.

Berries are not only “Berry Delicious” they are extremely healthy for you. Quoted from Oregon State University “Scientists have found berries have some of the highest antioxidant levels of any fresh fruits (measured as ORAC), and kale and spinach are the only vegetables with ORAC values as high as fresh, delicious berries. Fresh berries are some of the most powerful (and delicious) disease-fighting foods available.” More detailed information on the health and nutritional benefits of berries can be found at: http://berryhealth.fst.oregonstate.edu/health_healing/fact_sheets/

Dehydrating Basics
Feb 24, 2017
Drying fruits, vegetable and meats is one of the oldest methods of food preservation. With a dehydrator there isn’t really anything you can’t preserve through drying.
Unlike some recipes where you can’t control sugar content, dehydrating gives you room to experiment and preserve food with low sugar, low salt and high flavor.
Come spend the morning with us and learn the various methods of dehydration. Learn how to use food you have preserved.
We will also discuss creating dehydrated meals for use in backpacking and emergency preparedness.
Check in begins at 9:30 am. Class begins at 10 am sharp.
Classes are held at the Robert J. Cabral Agricultural Center, 2101 E. Earhart Ave., Stockton, CA 95206 in the Calaveras Room.
Registration Deadline is March 13, 2017
Space is limited!
If you need assistance or accommodations, please contact the UCCE Master Food Preservers of the Northern San Joaquin Valley at 209-953-6100.
